A featherweight duel between former contender Clay Guida and rising star Dennis Bermudez has been added to the UFC on Fox 12 card.
The event will kick off from the SAP Center in San Jose on July 26 but currently does not have a main event. There are two other confirmed fights on the main card. Light Heavyweight contender Anthony Johnson is set to face MMA veteran Antonio “Little Nog” Nogueira while former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson will take on TUF alumnus Michael Johnson.
A welterweight showdown between Viscardi Andrade and Andreas Stahl and a featherweight bout between Steven Siler and Noad Lahat has also been announced for the event, although the placement of these fights on the card remains unknown.
Guida enters the fight off an impressive decision victory in a Fight of the Night performance against Tatsuya Kawajiri in Abu Dhabi last April. “The Carpenter” is 2-1 since dropping down from lightweight in 2013, with a win over Hatsu Hioki in his featherweight debut before contender Chad Mendes handed him the first stoppage loss of his career in his next trip to the Octagon.
Bermudez was a finalist on TUF 14 but fell short at the final hurdle after being submitted courtesy of a Diego Brandao armbar. Since then, “The Menace” has clocked up six straight wins inside the Octagon including a Submission of the Night against Tommy Hayden, a Fight of the Night performance against Matt Grice and a Performance bonus Jimmy Hettes.
Bermudez’s form has seen him climb to 10 in the official UFC rankings but Guida marks a considerable step up in competition. A win for Bermudez will see him solidify his position in the top 10, and will show he has the mettle to slug it out with the marquee names of the division. Meanwhile, Guida will be looking to prove that he is more than just a gatekeeper and launch his resurgence at his new home at 145lb.
