On this week’s episode of MLB Access, Pittsburgh Pirates catching prospect Tony Sanchez joins the guys at H4TV to discuss several topics revolving around him and the Pirates organization. Tony talked about everything from the Pirates recent acquisition of catcher Chris Stewart to the feeling at PNC Park during the playoffs. Here are some excerpts from the interview.
On the passing of fellow prospect and friend Evan Chambers: “It’s a terrible thing, Evan was a part of our family. We always went out to eat together during Spring Training, always went to the beach together, he was one of us. It hit me pretty hard, it was the first time in a while I had to try and fight back tears.
On what the addition of Chris Stewart means to him: “Anything can happen, I kind of had a slight thought that this offseason they would go out and grab something. I knew they didn’t want me to backup Russell from the start sitting on the bench playing once a week. I gotta hit my way out of AAA again and I have no problem doing that.”
On the environment around the stadium during the stretch run and playoffs: “I could not spend one inning without getting the chills. 40,000 people there and no one would stop yelling the entire game. During the introductions we’re looking around thinking, these fans have waited so long for this, I’ve never experienced something like that and I can only hope I get to again.
